Student Email

Student email addresses, or SMAIL for short, are created for new students upon enrollment. Although your faculty will generally communicate with you using Course Mail inside of your online classes, emails from the rest of the university will be delivered to your student email address. Check your student email daily to avoid missing time-sensitive communications.

What is my student email (SMAIL) address?

Most Rasmussen student emails follow the same pattern:

  • firstname.lastname@smail.rasmussen.edu

Sometimes, when we have more than one student with the same name, student emails have a number added to them:

  • firstname.lastname3@smail.rasmussen.edu

Thus, if your name is Samantha Smiley, your Rasmussen student email would be:

  • samantha.smiley@smail.rasmussen.edu

If your name was John Doe, and there were 5 John Does in Rasmussen's student body, your email might be:

  • john.doe5@smail.rasmussen.edu

If you are not sure what your student email is, you will want to connect with your Advisor. Once you have your email address figured out, you can then log into your student email account.

Where/how do I access my student (SMAIL) email account?

  1. Go to http://smail.rasmussen.edu or
  2. Log into the student portal at http://portal.rasmussen.edu
    1. Email: Use your student email address
    2. Password: Use the first two letters of your first name, the first two letters of your last name and the last four digits of your Social Security Number (e.g. Susan Smith = susm1234)
    3. Click on the Email icon

Can I forward my student email (SMAIL) to my personal email?

No, due to global cybercrime activity, Rasmussen University is working diligently on fortifying its environment and does not allow the ability to auto-forward @smail.rasmussen.edu emails to a personal email address. Disabling auto-forwarding is a proactive cybersecurity initiative to protect student email accounts.

How do I add my student email (SMAIL) to my smartphone?

Your student email account (Microsoft Office 365) has been configured for mobile access, so to get email from your smartphone, you just need to configure your phone's email settings. Most email clients will allow users to type in an email address and then it will automatically configure the address. If this doesn’t work, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to http://smail.rasmussen.edu
  2. Click “Options” at the top right of the screen near the user’s name
  3. Click “See All Options”
  4. Near the middle of the page, there should be a link that says “Settings for POP, IMPA, and SMTP access…” Click on it.
  5. After clicking the link above, the user should be presented with the settings for their specific account

Please note that these settings must be retrieved from Office 365.  Because of the way the service works, users may be shifted between pods and the settings from a different pod will not work.
