Live Captioning and Transcription

Live captions display to individual users when enabled. To turn on live captions, click on the ellipses button in Microsoft Teams and select 'Turn on live captions' as pictured below.  Transcription occurs automatically and will display automatically when you review recordings in Microsoft Teams. Enabling live captions is a faculty best practice, so please give your instructor a gentle reminder if they forget.

Screen Readers

PC

Turn on the Narrator feature to interact with content on your Windows-based PC without a mouse. Whether you're working with documents, tables, or apps, Narrator is a must-have, built-in screen reader.

macOS

VoiceOver is the built-in screen reader in macOS Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15. This tool can be controlled via the keyboard, TouchID, and Siri.

PDF

Adobe Acrobat offers a built-in read-aloud feature for PDFs built according to accessibility standards.

Microsoft Office 365

Text-to-speech is available alongside a variety of other accessibility features in Microsoft Office 365. Use it to read full documents or highlighted text, narrate the user interface, and learn with the immersive reader capabilities.

NVDA Screen Reader

This open-source screen reader works with Blackboard, Respondus, and ATI. NVDA is only available for PCs running Microsoft Windows 8.1 and later.

Speech to Text

Your download of Microsoft Office 365 includes a built-in dictation feature to allow you to compose text with your voice.

Voice Control

In addition to using speech-to-text dictation features within software applications, you may consider using your voice to control your devices. Although Chromebooks do not meet the technology requirements at Rasmussen, similar voice control options are available if you are working on one temporarily.
