Knowledge Credit ™ Self-Directed Assessments

Rasmussen offers a variety Knowledge Credit ™ self-directed assessments (SDAs) that honor the prior knowledge that learners bring to the university by giving them the opportunity to “test out” of select courses. When successful, learners can save time and money with SDAs. Some SDAs test for knowledge through projects, while others use multiple choice and short answer assessments guided by artificial intelligence grading and feedback. SDAs also include small bursts of content and/or virtual interaction technology to allow learners to demonstrate their skills in real-world scenarios.

Eligibility

  • Students must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing to take a self-directed assessment (not on Academic Probation or Warning).
  • Students who test into remediation courses may not take a self-directed assessment until the remediation courses have been successfully completed.

Scheduling

  • In order to avoid scheduling conflicts, complete any SDAs PRIOR to the quarter in which the equivalent course is scheduled on your MAP and PRIOR to your final quarter.
  • Self-directed assessments can be taken during the quarter or prior to a student's first quarter start date. Contact your Advisor for additional information.

Request an SDA

  • New students whose first courses have not yet begun should contact their Program Manager to request to begin an SDA.
  • Current students can request a self-directed assessment while confirming their schedule each quarter.
  • New and continuing students may also contact their Student Advisor to request a self-directed assessment.

Payment

Effective January 3, 2022, the non-refundable fee for each self-directed assessment a student requests is $149. To make a payment:

  • Access the Account Center through the Student Portal.
  • Acknowledge the alert in the upper right corner of the Account Center by clicking on it.
  • Make a payment one of the following ways:
    • Click the Pay Online icon in the Student Portal
    • Click the "Pay Now" option in the Account Center

The self-directed assessment will become available approximately two business days after payment.

Your self-directed assessment will be found in the Student Portal > Blackboard Ultra Icon. Use the drop-down Courses menu to filter your self-directed assessments (SDA).

Time Limit

  • Self-directed assessments are available for 45 days from a student's first access.
  • Assignments should be submitted by day 43 of the SDA experience to allow time for grading.
  • Self-directed assessments close after 45 days. All access to SDAs disappears at this time.

Learner Responsibility

  • Self-directed assessments are not instructor-led.
  • Students must read and follow all instructions carefully.
  • Regular email reminders will be sent out regardless of completion status, but students must pace themselves.
  • As self-directed assessments are intended to test prior knowledge, tutoring and library support is limited to general academic skill development and basic research and writing assistance. Tutors and librarians will not provide clarification of assessment concepts.

Grading

  • Self-directed assessments are limited to 45 days from the date of first access.
  • Project-based assessments must be completed by the 43rd day to allow for grading prior to the deadline.
  • Types of assessments include
    • timed multiple choice (6 attempts per module)
    • project-based (2 attempts per module)
    • writing
    • short answer
  • Passing an SDA requires an overall average score of 80% across all modular assessments. For project-based SDAs, a rubric score of "2" is equivalent to 80%. (A "3" is 90% and a "4" is 100%).
  • Pass/fail information is posted the gradebook.
