Formatting Guidelines

Utilize the resources below when writing your paper:

Formatting Headers

  • Title Page
    • The header on the title page includes the words "Running head:" followed by the title in all CAPITAL LETTERS aligned left
    • Page numbers begin on the title page with page 1 and are aligned right
  • Subsequent pages
    • The header on all pages following the title page has the TITLE in all capital letters aligned left.
    • Paging continues on subsequent pages with page numbers aligned right.

Managing Titles Exceeding 50 Characters

According to APA rules, the title that appears in the header of your cover page (Running head: TITLE) and subsequent pages (TITLE) cannot exceed 50 characters including spaces and punctuation. In addition, it is recommended that titles never exceed twelve words. When the title is more than 50 characters, titles should be shortened.

Choosing the first two to five words of the title or key words from the title is a general guide to creating a Running head as long as they are under 50 characters including spaces.  View the examples below for guidance.

Example 1:

Title of paper:

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder: To Medicate or Not to Medicate...That is the Question

Running head:

Running head: ADULT ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

Header on subsequent pages:

ADULT ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER

Example 2:

Title:

Wait Until Your Mother Gets Home! Mothers' and Fathers' Discipline Strategies

Running head:

Running head: MOTHERS' AND FATHERS' DISCIPLINE STRATEGIES

Header on subsequent pages:

MOTHERS' AND FATHERS' DISCIPLINE STRATEGIES
