Medical Leave

Student Status Change

  • When on Medical Leave, students are treated as a drop/withdrawal for Financial Aid purposes and may end up owing a tuition balance.  See your advisor to determine the impact of a Medical Leave. You may also find more information under the Impacts to Loan/Grace Period tab above.
  • Please note that following the steps to return from leave will not require going through the enrollment process again.
  • The following may be impacted when a Medical Leave is taken:
    • Student Loan grace period
    • Financial aid
    • Graduation date
    • Student account balance

Impacts to Loans/Grace Period

  • As a student leave recipient, you may face repayment responsibilities with lenders.  If your loan has a grace period, you will not enter repayment until after that timeframe is passed.  If your loan does not have a grace period, you may enter repayment once your loans are fully dispersed.
  • If you are currently attending school less than half-time (undergraduate students attending less than 6 credit hours/graduate students attending less than 4 credit hours), you may already be in your grace period.
  • If you have previously used some or all of your grace period, this will impact your repayment obligations.
  • If you enter loan repayment during the time of your medical leave, you may be eligible for a deferment.  Contact your loan servicer for more information.
  • For more detailed information about loan repayment and grace periods go to Home | Federal Student Aid.

Exit Counseling

This is required anytime you take a leave from school, such as in the case of Medical Leave. You will receive an email within 30 days of approved medical leave status that will guide you through the Exit Counseling process. For more information about Exit Counseling and/or to get started, go to https://studentaid.gov/exit-counseling/.

  • As part of Exit Counseling, you will be able to view your Master Promissory Notes, request various repayment plans, and calculate your estimated monthly payments.
  • If you have any questions about this process or after completing it, we've hired ECMC Solutions to answer your student loan repayment questions. ECMC Solutions is dedicated to helping students manage educational loans. Their resources are also available at no additional cost.
  • Contact ECMC Solutions by phone at 1-877-331-3262, or visit their website to make an appointment, connect through email, or web chat with a student loan counselor.
  • ECMC Solutions will contact you while you are within your grace period to offer their loan repayment counseling services.

Grades

  • If the student takes Medical Leave on or before the close of the drop/add period, the course(s) will be dropped without being recorded on the student’s transcript and tuition will not be charged.
  • A grade of “WX” will be recorded for each course for which a student was registered if the student takes Medical Leave from the University at any time following the course drop period of the quarter.  This does not impact your GPA and you will be rescheduled into these courses upon your return.
  • If any student successfully completes a Term 1 5.5-week course (s) or Session 1 six week course(s) but then has to take a Medical Leave in Term 2 or Session 2, the letter grades they earned for those courses will remain on their transcript.

Tuition and Charges

  • If you are planning to take a medical leave, it is important to know how much you will owe for the term you are withdrawing from.
  • If the Medical Leave is taken before the close of the drop/add period, the course(s) will be dropped without being recorded on the student’s transcript and tuition will not be charged.
  • Tuition and federal financial aid is earned based upon the percentage of the term completed.  If you complete 60% of the term, there are no adjustments.
  • Depending on when your leave request is approved, you may be financially responsible for all or part of the term from which you drop.
