POST 9/11 GI BILL® (Chapter 33)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

If you have at least 90 days of aggregate active duty service after Sept. 10, 2001, and are still on active duty, you were honorably discharged or were discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days, you may be eligible for this VA-administered program. The Post 9/11 GI Bill® has a few specific components that are not available in other GI Bill® programs:

  • Yellow Ribbon Program
  • Transfer of Entitlement Option
  • Monthly Housing Allowance stipend
  • Book Stipend
  • Title 38 US Code 3679

POST 9/11 APPLICATION

►Once your application is completed, keep your confirmation page for your records

►Once the DVA has reviewed your application, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility Letter.  Please provide the school with a copy.  The time frame for receiving this letter can take 10-12 weeks, depending on the volume of applications the DVA reviews.  This will not delay certification of your benefits or your ability to start school. However, you will not receive your Military Housing Allowance, and/or the school will not receive tuition payment until the application has been processed.

Available Benefits and How They are Paid

DETERMINING PERCENTAGE OF ELIGIBILITY

The Department of Veterans Affairs will determine your percentage of eligibility based on your months and days of service. Your tuition and Monthly Housing Allowance are paid at the percentage of eligibility you are awarded.

Length of Service

At least 36 months 100%
At least 30 days on Active Duty and discharged due to service related disability 100%
At least 30 months, but less than 36 months 90%
At least 24 months, but less than 30 months 80%
At least 18 months, but less than 24 months 70%
At least 12 months, but less than 18 months 60%
At least 6 months, but less than 12 months 50%
At least 90 days, but less than 6 months 40%

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Full tuition and fees are paid directly to the school
  • Tuition is capped at the national maximum rate.
  • Students entitled to 100% tuition and fees paid by the DVA qualify for Yellow Ribbon when the tuition cap is reached

  • Once the 22-1995 application form is completed, keep your confirmation page for your records

STEM Scholarship

The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship

The Edith Nourse Rogers Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Scholarship allows some eligible Veterans and dependents in high-demand fields to extend their Post-9/11 GI Bill® or Fry Scholarship benefits. Yellow Ribbon Program

Rasmussen University Participates in the Yellow Ribbon program.

Yellow Ribbon can help you pay for higher out-of-state, private, foreign, or graduate school tuition and fees your benefit may not cover.  Students entitled to 100% tuition and fees paid by the DVA qualify for Yellow Ribbon when the tuition cap is reached.  We will automatically apply this benefit if you qualify.  Find out more information by clicking HERE

Transfer of Entitlement Option

TRANSFERRING THE POST 9/11 GI BILL®

 

An Active Duty service member can request a transfer of their Post 9/11 GI Bill® to a spouse or dependent children. The Department of Defense (DoD) will approve or decline the request to transfer benefits.  Once the DoD approves benefits for transfer, the new beneficiary applies for the benefit at HERE to apply

Withdrawing From or Failing a Course

If you are considering or planning to withdraw from a course:

  • Withdrawing from the quarter or failing a course can result in an overpayment between the student, the school, and/or the VA. 
  • This overpayment will create a debt that can affect future payments from the VA.
