Grammar and Mechanics

An independent clause has a subject, a verb, and a complete thought; it can stand alone as a full sentence. Every complete sentence must have one independent clause.

Example: We went to the mall.

We is the subject of this sentence.  Went is the verb in the sentence because it tells what the subject is doing.  The example has a subject, verb, and a complete thought; therefore, the example is considered to be an independent clause.
