What can I find in Google Scholar?

Google Scholar includes:

  • journal articles, including pre-prints and abstracts
  • conference proceedings, such as papers and presentations
  • student theses and dissertations published in university repositories
  • academic books and book chapters
  • technical reports, court opinions, and patents

It is important to know that Google Scholar includes grey literature, which is not all resources found in Google Scholar have been formally published and peer-reviewed. It is important to carefully evaluate each item to determine its quality and credibility. 

Things to Keep in Mind

While Google Scholar combines the ease of Google with access to scholarly materials, there are some downsides to keep in mind.

Limited Filter Options

Google Scholar as limited filtering options. For example, you cannot filter your results to only see peer reviewed sources, or only articles in English.

Full Text Access

Google Scholar does not provide full text access to everything in the results list. Make sure you set up the connection between the Rasmussen University Library and Google Scholar. If your are not able to find the full text that way, you can request articles through interlibrary loan.

Rigor

Academic content, including papers written by students for capstone courses, conference presentations, and non-peer-reviewed articles will all appear in your Google Scholar results. While these resources have an academic focus, they have not been formally published. For this reason, it is crucial for researchers to assess the quality and credibility of each source individually when using Google Scholar.
