Finding Company & Industry Information

A number of courses within the School of Business require students to research companies and industries. Additionally, many business professions require similar research, so it may be helpful to begin building your understanding of this type of research and the tools (and databases) available to you now. Use the tabs at the top of this box to navigate through various library databases, as well as eBooks, articles, and websites for conducting company and industry research.

1. Open the Passport database below. Accept the Terms and Conditions.

2. Often, the simplest way to search is by keyword in the topmost search bar. Then choose the area that interests you; for example, Market Sizes for Soft Drinks, or Company Shares for Soft Drinks, or a report from the Analysis area.

3. If searching by keyword didn't produce the results you were hoping for, try using the Company or Industry dropdown menus to browse.

4. If you've selected Industries, next you will need to choose an industry.

5. If you've selected companies, next you will need to search for a company. Many companies have analysis available, and some companies have profiles available. Click on either one to begin reading. If your company isn't available, try another database, like Mergent Online.

Lastly, remember to look at the company's own website. But, do so with the knowledge that the website may be biased in favor of the company. Look for the following sections: About Us, SEC Filings, Annual Reports, For Investors, etc.
