The History Behind Black History Month

Black History Month was created by historian Carter Godwin Woodson in 1926 and was originally Negro History Week.

February was chosen as Black History Month because the birthdays of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass are in February.

Negro History Week became Black History Month in 1976 under the order of U.S. President Gerald Ford.
